I'd call that a tunnel

I'm guessing that you must've been routinely whizzing over the drop in a vehicle before. You and General Vagueness that is. I'm pretty sure I was on foot on my first playthrough, partly so I could have a leisurely look at things along the way - and consequently found the tunnel right away. I've used it as a cover spot against vehicles sometimes.
