You mean Skype and stuff? I guess those could work too.
However, I can guarantee you it does not hurt the least to use G+, especially considering you probably obviously already have a Google account. In fact, you don't even have to use G+. Just upgrade your Gmail chat to Hangouts and it'll work from your e-mail.

Unless you use the Phone function in your Gmail's chat. Then don't upgrade, lest you lose it. I think you can downgrade easily, but it's kind of annoying.
