This'll be such a huge discussion for some time. I've been doing my research, and the reason seems to go to Microsoft's long-term plan with the Xbox One. If this is true or not, it best explains what that plan could be.

Essentially, if I'm correct, the reason we have to check in every 24 hours is so we can trade in our digital games, as well as other digital services. Microsoft is battling with getting fully into this digital world, and keeping people who like to have their CDs and etc. happy. It's going to be an interesting next few years of gaming.
