Canceling pre orders is actually how things change. Blizzard's realID fiasco came to an end because folks CANCELED PREORDERS for Diablo and Starcraft. Money means something, so they freaked out and reverted. So canceling xbox 360 preorders could actually work. What have you got to lose? If MS doesn't change, just preorder again right before launch if you just HAVE to have it. And if they do change, you win.

Now, whether enough people will cancel xbox preorders, or whether that can actually be removed and isn't a fundamental part of the console somehow remains to be seen.
