See PGR for a good example of toolset here. Many of the 'good' screenshots you see out of Halo these days are just using explosions and lighting to try and fake the kind of effects that are easy as pie in PGR.

I think there is zero advantage in trying to hide how mechanics work in a game. You make it more obtuse for everyone and when someone does figure it out they get an often unreasonable advantage. Better to have it open and obvious so people can critique it more easily and you can work on getting mechanics that are just plain ol' better.
