It's the corporate mentality - they think that they are reducing risk and maximizing the chances of success. It's sad that people think that way and it's really quite doomed but that is where they are.

They are in a world were failure is not an option. MS has given them mega-bucks but MS expects mega-results. Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM. Corporate - Safe

And Peter Jackson has moved on from things-that-are-like-games-but-not-a-game so they need another director who gets games. And Spielberg is bigger.

Maybe YouTube is the way to go, or kickstarter, or something else that is disruptive and doesn't need big money to create.
