I guess it's what I grew up with. PlayStation 2 was backwards compatible with PlayStation games, the early PlayStation 3's were backwards compatible with PS2 games. And even the Xbox 360, though it was a hassle and had to update the system to make the games backwards compatible, still valued backwards compatibility in some way.
It's not a huge deal, but it seems like something that used to be valued in gaming, is no longer. And like you said, a lot of the older consoles were NOT backwards compatible, but that's because the technology wasn't there for that. Then the technology for that did arrive, and now it's taking a step backwards.
To me, it's sort of like Halo 4's Campaign not having Theater mode. There was this great technology being used years ago, that just doesn't work with the architecture of the current generation any longer because they no longer value that as integral part of the system.

I'm not bitching because it's fun. I want to see the Xbox One succeed and outdo the competition, but a lot of what I saw yesterday doesn't have me convinced. I love playing my Xbox- it's an easier system to use, it has Halo, and I have more friends on there than I do PS3 or Steam. I don't want to give up on it.
I'd be more likely to get a PS4 at this point just because my girlfriend only really plays PlayStation and I have a PS Vita. Sure it doesn't have backwards compatibility either, but I don't have like 50 PS3 games like I do with Xbox.
