The Lyches seem more like mobile weapons platforms that happen to have some troop capacity - a flying Scarab with its main tool being the EMP blast it used on the Mammoth.

I would presume the light cruiser would have plasma batteries in some form akin to its bigger sister and able to actually assist in glassing our colonies or bombarding encampments while it unloaded its troops.
