I diggin' Pete's idea of double-tapping to engage the animation.
It's tough for me to gauge how long I'm pressing the right bumper (bumper jumper) as I press it with the inside of my index finger's first knuckle. Especially when I reeeeeally want to hit them hard ;) It's certainly not a game-breaker to be stuck in the animation, though. I understand it's the fault of the user - not the mechanics. I just seek the best way to give the user more control.
