I didn't say it was. But that doesn't mean that dissonance isn't a thing.
: And while resonance
: does indeed feel good, a lack of it does not necessarily mean it's a mark
: against it.
Not necessarily, but if someone looks at something and sees loads of missed opportunities, that's a justifiable complaint.
I wasn't trying to say that anything is necessarily anything; I was saying that it can be something, which is all that really needs to be said to point toward why a lot of the dislike toward Reach can be justified.

: Ideally, one would have a strong story, strong storytelling, and strong canon
: if required, but not all stories are ideal. If a weakness in one ruins all
: the others by default, then it's a lack of objectivity that can harm an
: overall assessment.
: Too much canon, and things start getting shoehorned
: in. Too much story, and the momentum bogs down. Too much storytelling at
: the expense of story and/or canon, and one loses investment. But even if a
: balance isn't reached, it doesn't make the overall experience bad by
: default.
: There are installments in franchises I loathe on a fan level due

: them bad by default.
I doubt most people's complaints have anything to do with "by-default" rulings on account of your simplistic rubric. Do you think that the notion of "canonical consistancy" arose by itself? How does that make any sense? It's almost always a rough attempt to articulate why something wasn't as enjoyable as it should have been. People don't play through Reach, enjoy it, and then come on the forum and bitch like crazy on account of it not meeting certain bullet points. They construct those bullet points to describe why they didn't like how something was executed, based on how it interacted with the other fictional elements placed around it by means of being part of a series.
Also, and I suggested this in my earlier post, I feel like you're drawing a false equivalence between "objective" and "in isolation." This is especially bizarre when the things you're demanding be viewed in isolation in order to guarantee objectivity are the categories on your custom-made rubric. A rubric which, as I have argued, does not clearly contain categories that are even all that possible to isolate. Like, how do I assess the quality of including details of outside canon without considering their impact on the storytellign?
