Yeah, he was the right colour in both H3 and Reach.
In a 343i weekly update where they were talking about Grifball, someone they had an interview with mentioned that Grif was orange. There was an aside-note with something like "ignore the screenshot below then, lol".

That was it though. I don't know why they didn't bother fixing it.
