Co-op Night is Monday!
Posted By: Kermit <Kermi7@mac.com>Date: 1/27/13 10:48 p.m.

Intrusion alert! [sic]

Co-op Night is Monday at 8:30 EST

Last week Spartan Ops didn't have a wow moment for me like during the Shootout in Valhalla chapter in Episode 3, but Episode 6 felt tighter, a bit more frenetic, and it was cool to play in some new spaces (I dig night maps). I forgot to unmute myself so all my wise mutterings sent unheard, and by the last chapter I was downright pouty--convinced that my team cared nothing for what I had to say. (They actually didn't miss much.) Had a good laugh when we realized what happened.

You can navigate to the stats from last week here:

Our average kill variance over the five missions was really low for a few teams. My team's was only 12 (which is great!), and Snipe's team was close behind, with 15.8. For the first time in the history of Co-op Night, we had a three-way tie for most assists in a game: Chewbaccawakka, Lawnmower172, and Gwath Gil (Levi) each got 22.

I'm dedicating this week's Co-op Night to Scalemaster because I know that (like me) he loves human environments, and from the previews (Thanks, 343i!), we've got 'em. Fingers crossed that this episode is as much fun as Cairo Station. Here's the trailer:

This week's battle plan:

Spartan Ops Episode 7: Invasion

Legendary

There are challenges related to Spartan Ops, so if you notice you get one, help others on your team get theirs. (Don't be greedy.)

If you haven't yet, be sure and send a friend request to Coop Night on XBL. This will help me organize teams.

Co-op Night FAQ

Why co-op?

I like playing with other people--especially HBOers. We all love inhabiting the worlds of Halo and kicking alien butt. Co-op Night gives us to chance to do this while also enjoying each other's company and maybe getting to know each other better than we might when we're trying to shoot each other in the face.

What will we play?

A new episode of Spartan Ops is planned every week.

Why can't we play ahead of time?

I can't stop you, but the idea this time is to experience some content fresh. In general, Co-op Night is about having a night where if you show up, it's assumed you are interested in co-op with HBOers, and you’re committed to playing through one episode (five missions).

So there are no rules?

Not really, but the goal is to milk as much fun as possible out of each mission, and for the most part, this means full path Halo, killing everything, saving the galaxy with style and leaving piles of dead enemies in our wake. In other words, this is not high speed Halo. Ideally, we'll play as true comrades in arms, communicating (mikes on--but not to chat with your buddy who's playing War Games), sticking together, and watching each other's back. On co-op night, assists count as much as kills.

When do we play?

8:30 p.m. on Monday nights. We'll play the last episode on February 18th. (Here is the full schedule.) Playing all the chapters can take longer than your typical Halo level, so I moved the starting time up a little. Yes, you will probably be done early, but think of that as a feature, not a bug.

Why Mondays?

I wanted to move it earlier in the week so people would have less time to wait and can play on Co-op Night without having played the missions. (New Spartan Ops Episodes are released early Monday.)

How will teams be formed?

Here's the step by step of how team formation on co-op night works.

1. Send a friend request to the gamertag Coop Night on XBL.

2. If you're online at the designated time, I assume you have an interest in co-op and invite you to my lobby in Halo 4.

3. If and when we have a full room, we play a short game and the results will serve as our randomized team list. I'll assign team leaders, and otherwise we'll count off four starting from the top.

4. The party leaders leave to form their own Xbox Live party, inviting their assigned teammates (usually the two to three names under them in the last game results).

5. We'll watch the episode individually, and then we'll jump into the game lobby and begin playing.

I hope to begin playing by 8:45.

But what about my friends?

You have friends? Congratulations! Gathering a party to play co-op should be easy whenever you want. Quit your bellyaching, soldier! You've got a job to do. Co-op night isn't about playing with the same old people you always play with. It's about playing with the HBO community, and maybe forming new friendships and bonds forged in brightly colored blood.
