In Response To: My H4 review - Multiplayer (Avateur) : Forge : I have no idea. I haven't really tried to use it. petetheduck has still been
Forge is a constantly evolving tool, and 343 Industries has made some great additions to it. Magnets, duplicate, shadows, trait zones, gravity volumes--these are, hands down, good stuff. There are some confusing things about Halo 4's Forge as well. Precision editing was "overlooked", which is a concerning choice of words. This is something all of the Cartographers noticed almost immediately in Kirkland, which makes me very surprised this got past 343 Industries and Certain Affinity. We can adapt, but that's easily the biggest step backwards. There are smaller details: you can no longer zoom in while in Monitor mode. If you try to move or rotate a large object, you are pushed out to maximum distance--which can make it very hard to align objects, especially with the heavily-textured edges on pieces like the Coliseum Wall. And you can't tell me that the Column costing 50 while the gi-friggin'-normous Impact Silo 3 only costing 10 makes any friggin sense. The budget for Forge needs to be completely reworked, period. And the Forge maps are small, confined, awkward spaces. I attribute most of these issues to Certain Affinity--343 Industries assigned them to make the Forge maps, and it seems like they just copy/pasted the entire Halo: Reach Forge palette and budget as-is. I'm not sure how long they've been involved with Forge--I've heard that they were heavily involved in Halo: Reach's Forge as well, but I'm really wondering why 343 Industries isn't doing this work themselves. It seems like that's what should've happened here. As far as game types go, when you directly transition over from Halo: Reach's Forge that saw the addition of unique and powerful game types Speedflag and Halo Ball to the infancy of Halo 4, it's a bit jarring. I'll stick with my original impression of Forge in Halo 4--it is very focused. But I'm being optimistic that 343 Industries, over the next year, will add new game types to Halo 4 like One Flag, Race, Infection, etc. Game types should be the easiest addition to Halo 4--easier than maps, TU, etc. And everything I've heard from 343 Industries makes it sound like they're interested in keeping the experience fresh with new additions over time, whether it's rotating playlists or the eventual incorporation of community maps in matchmaking. And I see game types fitting in nicely with those plans. Time will tell. It's really up to them.
