In Response To: Visualizing the Halo Universe: Round 3 (Postmortem)

I like the fact that I'm actually having a hard time choosing between the different submissions. It means you guys are creating some great stuff, and adhering to the fiction well. There was some great stuff this time around, but here's the winner for Round 3...

The Winner:
Nikko B201

Accuracies:

Anatomy is very similar to males, portrayed with combat armor, general Sangheili anatomy.

Inaccuracies:

Not sure if a military force would produce armor that highlight's a soldier's sexual receptiveness, but eh...

Artistic License:

Color-shifting spots to indicate receptiveness, armor designed to match spots' colors, humped back.

My Thoughts:

While this is a simple sketch, it matches the description of the female Elites from the expanded universe very well, exhibiting very little sexual dimorphism that is easily noticeable from a human's perspective. While some might think that the Elites might exhibit more human-like characteristics, you must remember that they fall somewhere between a reptile and a dinosaur as far as classification goes. And on that note, can you point out the female alligators in this picture?

The hump to me actually seems like an excellent way of meeting this sexual dimorphism issue halfway, presenting a realistic approach that makes sense given their role as nurturing parents, without betraying the warrior/predatory build. Although no exact reason was given, I took the hump to be a fatty store, for survival when required to spend long periods at home raising children, and perhaps it's something that develops when they are fertilized, indicating their switch in behavior from hunter to nurturer.

Additionally, it reminds me of these Elites from Halo Wars and The Package, making me think of how possible it may have been that some of these were actually female Elites:

The hump also makes me think of this:

Other Entries:

Sl'askia

Accuracies:

Oviparous (young hatches from eggs), general Sangheili anatomy.

Inaccuracies:

Only one lower jaw (probably artistic license).

Artistic License:

Traditional clothing that matches human anatomy/aesthetics, eggs in Covenant incubator, depiction of only one lower jaw (similar to The Duel)

My Thoughts:

As mentioned above, this one seems like it was trying (much like The Duel) to appeal to human aesthetics, rather than presenting an alien approach to the female lifestyle. The fact that she's holding an pike in one hand, but watching over eggs on the other side is very symbolic of the Elite female's dual function in their society. I love the incubator, and specifically the way the eggs are contained within it by an energy shield. It actually got me thinking about Sangheili birthing, and if they go to special birthing chambers where technology can ensure a healthy incubation. Perhaps there are Sangheili families who opt for a natural incubation, laying and incubating their eggs at home much like some human families opt for home birth versus hospital birth. For that matter, is Sangheili gender determined by temperature variations during incubation, as it is with a lot of reptiles on Earth? If that's the case, I wonder if the Covenant/Prophets ever intentionally manipulated the incubation to produce more males or more females based on what was needed at the time. Definitely some interesting aspects of their lives to explore here.

Suzy

Accuracies:

Traditional robes, general Sangheili anatomy, orange sky.

Inaccuracies:

Thin legs would be unlikely for a being of such mass evolved on a world with higher gravity than Earth

Artistic License:

More 'dinosaur-like' feet.

My Thoughts:

I love this piece, particularly the color usage. The general scene is great too, the way they're both at home, but prepped for defense. It makes me think of The Thursday War for sure, and represents the female's duality, much like the last piece. Everything about this just screams 'Sangheilios' to me, both in culture and in visuals (see: that orange sky). You did an excellent job on this, and the only thing that throws me off is the more lanky body design, because that's where the 'warrior' look seems to fall apart by making them look a bit too fragile. But overall, this is really awesome!

NikGntre

Accuracies:

General Sangheili anatomy, Covenant-like structures in the background, Forerunner glyphs on clothing, orange sky.

Inaccuracies:

None.

Artistic License:

Traditional clothing.

My Thoughts:

The cartoonized appearance makes this one more difficult to judge for accuracy than the others, but given what's apparent, this does just as great of a job adhering to the canon. There doesn't seem to be too much sexual dimorphism presented here, with the clothes being the only unique item presented, although they could just as easily belong to a male Elite as well. I rather like the mood of this piece, with the sun setting behind the buildings with the orange sky of Sangheilios as backdrop. While there isn't really much occuring in this piece and very little personality comes through, the general mood of the whole scene is really great. I feel like i get a sense of what sunset on Sangheilios is like... and that's saying a lot, given how simple of an illustration this is! The robing is great, and I particularly like that you didn't stick with all the Covenant's traditional colors, which gives this some more variety. The wrist guards are a nice touch that really makes her feel like she's prepared, even though she's dressed in her more traditional clothing.

And that's it for this week. Congratulations to the winner, who will be receiving their avatar code to do with as they please shortly.

We'll be taking a break for a week, and then this coming Sunday you can check back in for the next subject! Thanks to everyone who participated!
