Real Flying Marathon Frisbee! *IMGs*

Custom Marathon-symbol frisbee SUCCESS!!!

I posted about this a WHILE ago, but for obvious reasons (it's $70), I hadn't ordered one...til NOW. I finally saved up some fun-money and ordered my first custom-designed frisbee, and it came today!
FYI: I don't make profit from this model, the cost you see is purely Shapeways material/process cost.

Before I get too geeky, here's a link to get your own: http://www.shapeways.com/model/367525/marathon-disk-2-durandal-edition.html

Also, check out my newly-cheaper Halo 3 Pelican! :D

Now on with the geek-out...

Why did I make a frisbee out of the Marathon symbol? Clearly I already love Bungie and their games, but more than that, it seemed like a fun challenge to make something geometrically asymmetric but still retain axial mass-symmetry. Oh yeah, and make it FLY!

I used a program called Unigraphics to model everything, but that's not the cool part - I could've modeled this in Google Sketchup and gotten the same shape. HOW I got this shape it the cool part. I was pretty confident that the off-center hole wouldn't be an aerodynamic problem, but I KNEW it would be a mass-balance problem. Luckily, Unigraphics is a freekin' powerful 3D modeling program! :D

Unigraphics has a module in it that calculates the volume and mass of your model. So once I cut the hole and measured how far the center of mass moved, all I had to do was add in a blob of plastic on the same side to bring the mass back to the circle's geometric center. ...theoretically. ;)

Well it WORKED, and I got my first print of it today! I immediately threw it across the room and SUCCESS!!

It also has some slot-pockets on the inside of the lip, sized for a standard BB, that I put in so that you could add mass to the whole thing. Since it's just plastic, I figured I might need to add some heft to it for playing outside in the wind. I'll let you know how that goes ... ;)

Meanwhile, enjoy my little talk about it, and go get one of your own!
