Indy LAN write up (SUPER LONG) *img *vid

Warning: This is a VERY long post. Everything is from my perspective. There is also language, so if you are easily offended I would suggest you don’t read it.

HBO INDY write up: the Revenant Perspective

Planning and Pregame
The thought of an HBO LAN had been thrown around several times in our meetings online. Now, it’s not like there haven’t been HBO LAN’s before, Louis Wu has held several in the time that he’s founded halo.bungie.org. The kind of LAN we had been discussing was to be hosted by other members of HBO, and not on the East coast. Interest in such an event seemed abundant, people willing to travel to faraway places all in the hopes of being able to frag those friends known only by their online personas, yet nothing ever materialized. A venue, seemed to elude us.

That was until Bones153 decided to pull the trigger to organize an event we all sorely wanted to attend.

For me, the timing was perfect and the only way the location could have been any better was if it was in my home town, but considering that Indianapolis is only a 2-3 hour drive from Columbus AND it was literally a simple drive down one highway I wasn’t going to complain. With RSVP confirmed and necessary time off work approved, it was just a matter of sorting out some logistical details.

Carpooling was brought up, and I was asked if it would be possible for me to pick up Padraig08. No problem I though, we had all discussed our locations before and Padraig had mentioned a few times that he lived pretty close to me in Columbus, Eire in fact. Ok, so not my first choice…I have to go out of my way a couple of hours to get Padraig and then drive back down through my town and over to Bones. Total drive time = 6 hours

Were it so easy.

Once Padraig sent me his address, I realized that I made a slight mix up between Eire Ohio, and Eire Pennsylvania. New total drive time = 11 hours.

At this point, I believe I let out an audible “fuck”.

Oh well. It had to be done. Padraig is too hilarious to not be at the LAN. I’ve got a mission to do damnit.

During all this Bone’s had been hard at work generating a pretty impressive equipment manifest. If anything was apparent, it was that Bones was doing everything possible to ensure that all the bases were covered when it came to food, games, and hardware. Being an IT man myself I threw in what I could supply aside from a standard xbox and tv. Some of it was my own personal stuff, some of it was “borrowed” from work. After everything was packed, I received one last request from Bones that I bring something special to mark the occasion. I told him I would do my best, as it was dependent on the weather. With everything packed, I was just one sleep away from meeting my friends.

Day 1
I loaded my truck and left early Friday morning, and made the drive from Columbus to Eire. I arrived at Padraig’s a little before noon I think. I called to let him know I was there, and then came that awkward moment where I waited for him to come out, trying to guess which person he was in a small crowd of people. It wasn’t very hard, as soon as I saw the Iron Maiden t-shirt I knew it was him, and once he saw my Megadeth t-shirt he knew it was me. You see folks, Padriag and I have another thing in common besides Halo, and that would be Heavy Metal. As we drove from Eire back down to Columbus we talked pretty much the entire time about the various bands we liked and the live shows we’ve attended. Padraig is what I would call a classic Metal enthusiast (Iron Maiden, Dio, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath) while I myself am a classic Thrash Metal enthusiast (Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica). Old school and a little less old school.

In about the first hour I basically lost my voice due to laughing so much because, well, Padraig is funny as fuck in person. I will say this now: while we were all fortunate enough to have Padraig’s presence grace us at the Indy LAN, I got to have him for an extra 18 hours, so NEENER NEENER :D
Earlier I mentioned that depending on the weather, I might be bringing a special package to the party. Well the Halo gods smiled upon me and day one was a very overcast, with mild temperature (you see, for the last several weeks the temps had been in the 90s, and my package doesn’t like extreme heat). Since it was still cloudy when we arrived back in Columbus and a little rainy, I decided that it was safe to take my package since the sun wouldn’t be beating down on it for several hours. So we made a pit stop at my place since it was on the way to stretch and pick up my package.

I also ended up giving Padraig a Gravity Hammer from the Objective McFarlen toy pack (I didn’t want it) for his troubles. He ended up putting it to good use. (if he resends me the pic, I’ll post it but I don’t have it at the moment)

Once loaded we began the final quick trek to Indy, a simple drive out west down I-70 for a couple of hours. Or it would have been if we hadn’t gotten in the middle of rush hour traffic while leaving Columbus. Still, we kept the mood light and funny as I noticed we were passing a truck towing a bunch of hay bales and I said something to the extent of “hey look Paddy, we’re going to beat Bone’s furniture to his place” lol. Also, we came up with some suh-weet ideas for future HBO videos set to one of the greatest white boy rap songs I know. Hopefully, it never sees the light of day!
The sights on the ride out were pretty boring. Unlike the drive to Eire that cut through the hills of Ohio, the drive to Indy was full of boring flatness and lots of corn fields. Though, we knew we had arrived in Indiana once the bible bill boards began to get more frequent. Also, Tom Raper of Tom Raper’s RVs everywhere.

From the internets. It really did look like this minus the snow

yeah

We arrived in Indianapolis shortly afterwards, and then to Bone’s place. We had a bit of trouble finding it at first. Apparently, the complex was laid out in a system like this : buildings are arranged in an order down the street from 1-10. We need to be in building number 5. Oh wait, some jackass decided that #5 needs to be on the other side of the street next to nothing, for no raisin! I can’t wait to not find it!

So as Padraig began to zip between trees in a ninja-brute like manner (my only regret is not getting pictures or video of this) looking for the right building, I called Bones to ask. When I described our predicament, here’s how the conversation went:

Me: Bone’s we can’t find your place #5. The addresses go 1-2-3-4-6-7-8 its bullshit

Bones: goddamnit Revenant, didn’t you look at the map and directions I sent you?

Me: Shut up, of course I did… A week ago :D

Bones: FINE, I’ll come find you

Me: Love you too buddy!

Bones came out and we were pretty much where we needed to be, just a little off. We then exchanged manly HBO-hugs and bro-fists as we looked at each other with that ‘wow-this-is-what-(insert person)- actually-looks-like’ face lol. I will admit that I didn’t make it easy- I decided to shave my head a few days earlier just “because” and to maybe mess with people. So I guess only a few people know what I REALLY look like haha.

We then walked in where we were greeted by Kermit, Jennos, PkmnRules, Postmortem, and Unnh who arrived at the same time we did.

It was great I felt like I was at home and that I had known these folks for years. We all talked about our various trips to Indy and how long we were staying, among other random conversations. Not too long after that, CaneCutter, Korny & Sammy and BlueRunner arrived and the real fun began.

We had made arrangements to go see the Dark Knight as a group, but before we went we decided to go out to eat first at an Applebee’s. We went and enjoyed a quick bite to eat, with most of us ordering the same thing actually, the cowboy burger. Padraig asked the waitress if she could get him a flawless-cowboy burger- she just looked at him with this look of “dafuq?” and then we quickly told her to ignore his ramblings. Then she just looked at us all and laughed uncomfortably. On an unrelated note, a large tip was left.

We received word that our last guests had arrived back at Bones’ place, so we headed back to organize the Batman excursion. Six Min Whistle, Ibeechu, and GV had arrived, in all their glory.

I think the only people who weren’t with us at this point was Levi - I believe he wanted to skip the movie for another time. We split up into groups and headed out. I rode with Bluerunner, Korny, Sammy, and CaneCutter who for some reason kept talking about his love for ass and I wondered what kind of inside joke I was missing.

I also learned a lot about BlueRunner, most of his sentences started out with a “This reminds me of that time when I __________”. As I let him talk about “that time when I was building the panama canal” (or something like that) I kept trying to figure out who he reminded me of, and I think it came down to being a mix between Ellis from left4dead 2 and Abe Simpson. A taste of blue, for you:

We all gathered at the theater and found seats; the showing was packed. The movie was OK in my opinion, nothing to write home about but I enjoyed seeing it more with the HBOers than I would have myself I think. Then again, I’m also biased because to me there is no one that can do a better Batman then Kevin Conroy from Batman the Animated Series. So yeah.

Also Padraig does one HELL of a Christian Bale Batman impersonation. Lol I think the idea of making an HBO version of the Expendables 2 trailer was thrown around when we saw it. ALSO VAN DAMME.
(In our version, it would have been ALSO VAGUENESS)

We headed up and then went back to Bones’ to get ready for sleeps. Movies and other things were discussed, though not much sleep was had due to people talking long into the night about random things and then Halo things.

Day 2

I personally didn’t get much sleep at all due to sleeping next to Padraig who sounds like an idling diesel engine…that’s about to explode. It also didn’t help that we all got an early wakeup call around 7am from Momma Vagueness.

Jennos and I were the first to awake, so we went to Kroger and got donuts for everyone. I had a hankering for Krispy Kreme so I ended up buying 2 dozen of them while she got 2 dozen Kroger donuts. Basically, we had a lot of fucking donuts for 2 people so I can only imagine the looks we were getting.

We drove back to find Padraig doing Bane impressions and canecutter cooking bacon and you guessed it- talking about ass again.

After that, we began loading equipment into Cane’s truck to take to the club house. Some say we were ridin derpy dirty.

Bone’s had to step away briefly for a much needed break so I became tasked with getting hardware organized and setup, or as I liked to call it herding cats. When Bones returned we had a couple of lobbies setup but were having issues getting the two halves of the room to “talk” to each other networking wise. Using my IT detective skills I found that someone had decided to hook up two links between the switch and hub we had, causing the connections to drop every 4 seconds.

Rookies.

I took care of that issue but still, something was wrong… It turned out that one of the ports on Canecutters hub had taken a shit, so we couldn’t get all the xboxs to link up. Not wanting to spilt more than two to a screen, Cane and I volunteered to head out to a local electronic store to get another switch that had all the ports we needed. Jennos and Ibeechu (who was wearing a name tag that said “dick butt”) joined us on our quest to restore connectivity to the LAN as we drove around looking for a simple switch. Two failed trips to Walmart and bestbuy later; we got what we needed at a Fry’s.

Realizing that Canecutter would be leaving early the next day (and thus leaving us with only an 8 port switch for 12 xboxes), I decided to take one for the team and plunk down $75 on a 16 port switch to make sure that nothing else would hinder our enjoyment or keep Bones from the event he had worked so hard to setup. I’m serious, the man had been working really hard. So hard that he was breaking a sweat everytime I looked at him ;)

When we got back Bones had Lunch waiting for everyone. Before we would begin to play though, I had a treat to share with everyone in the form of a long ago promised HBO montage. Unnh was kind enough to loan his laptop to my projector and we gathered people around, music cranked up high. I was unbelievably nervous about showing it off- it was the first montage I’ve ever made and I just wanted it to be good. My nervousness subsided however when the room erupted into laughter after the first few clips. If you didn’t get to see it in my post a few weeks ago, here it is again for your viewing pleasure

And then we got going for some HALO, finally!
We started out with Reach and worked our way backwards down to Combat Evolved (a terrible idea, in hindsight, more on that later). Reach was a lot of fun; we had 16 players for pretty much every match, making for some great BTB moments and intense CTF games. There was one particular moment that really shined between Jennos and Padraig:

Padraig: WHAT! How the hell did you kill me??? I shot WAY more bullets than you did!!

Jennos: Yeah, see that’s the thing Paddy, my bullets actually HIT you

Entire room: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Padraig:

We carried on though the maps, and I stuck to hologram for most of the time and as I was trying to explain to everyone how I get satisfaction from it, I was able to demonstrate on our host, Bones. You see, the thing about hologram is that I may not fool you with it 9 out of 10 times. But that 1 time I do? Oh buddy, NOTHING compares to that moment when you completely make your opponent feel like an idiot lol.

Bones learned that in the first 2 minutes of a game on Boardwalk. The kicker? He KNEW the entire time I had it, he KNOWS I like to use it AND he heard me talking to him that I was using it to troll Jennos.

So he chases me around a corner near the Shotgun spawn and I retreat past the opening (being near dead and all), fire off a distraction, and watch Bones chase it, melee it, and then say “OH SHI-FUCKING REVENANT” -shotgun cycles a round- BOOM! Bones eats buckshot.

Being able to see the look on his face AND talk shit about it in person was way better than doing it online, and it was a moment I truly enjoyed because of it.

Don’t let it fool you though, Bones was having plenty of fun and revenge

Other highlights (from my perspective) included the mini-rivalry that Padraig and I had through the day. Lol the room would be pretty much silent, tension in the air and then all of a sudden you’d hear this:

Me: SHIT!
(2 min pass)

Me: FUCK! Gah, FUCK!!!

Padraig: MUWHAHAHAHA!
(1 min pass)

Me: GODDAMNIT PADRAIG
Padraig: TROLL-OLLOLOLOLOL SUCK IT REV!

So yeah, I basically blurted out obscenities all night because Padraig seemed to have a mission that night to RUIN everything I would set out to do. Cap a flag? NOPE. Arm the bomb? DON’T think so.
It’s ok though, I made sure he “got” as good as he gave. See, Padraig loves his vehicles. You know what I love? Justice. Red. Hot. Lasery justice. The faces he raged were amazing, hilarious, and terrifying. No warthog for you!

Oh you want to drive Meeka around do you? Well, my friend Mr. Blast-y disagrees!

We moved on to Halo 3, a game that seemed familiar and foreign to me all at the same time. It took me a few games to warm up but once I found my sweet spot things got better. Since Snipe was unable to make it down to Indy I decided to use the Sniper as much as I could in his honor. I did my best to dish out pain from afar, of which P-Kay was quick to alert his team to :

*Revenant picks up sniper*

*Revenant fires a shot, misses*(three times in a row )

P-Kay: SNIPER SNIPER THEY GOT SNIPER REVENANTS GOT SNIPER SOMEONE TAKE OUT THAT SNIPER

Korny: Don’t worry he shot all the walls instead

Entire room: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo

Then we moved on to Halo 2, a game even more foreign to me. I did terrible playing this. I never got to touch the sniper and had to rely on the noob combo to be effective at all. We played some great games on the classic Halo 2 maps like Relic, which PostMortem made sure we played asap. Another game that I did terrible at was 1 sided ctf on Ivory tower, and played the role of bullet sponge. Aside from that, I don’t remember much from Halo 2. I was sad we didn’t play on Containment or terminal. Although, I did win a game once and I have proof of that moment

Bones was kind enough to feed us with Pizza hut so we all took a food break. I think by this time of the night Korny had snapped about 1.2 million pictures (citation needed).

I always wanted to meet Louis Wu

It was also around this time that I discovered some of the greatest cookies that I have eaten. Bones was kind enough to have his mother (who I will refer to from here on out as Mama Boner) bake cookies for us all that must have come out of the oven of God himself. Did I mention they had M&M’s in them? No? Well they did.

And crack.

Because I had to stop myself from eating a large container full of them.
I literally stopped a few times to see if anyone was watching me double fist those delicious bastards. (Bones, if you are reading this, when we meet again [and believe me, we will meet again] you MUST bring some of these with you. Name your price and I shall pay it!)

After the feast of foods, Bones gathered us all around for a contest, ODST style. The prize? Some sweet Halo swag in the form of shot glasses. He assigned a random number to each of us and we split into teams. My team was comprised of Me, BlueRunner, PostMortem, and Sammy. GAME ON. I am a competitive person when it comes to Halo and I really wanted to win this. The rules were simple: One 15 minute game on security zone, heroic difficulty, team with the highest score wins.
We had a 60 second window to strategize, and so we did.

Bluerunner would be on Brute patrol, I would be sniper, Postmortem would be our laser jockey on wraith patrol, and Sammy would be on bugger guard. It was tense. We were calling out enemies, watching each other’s backs and still be were just blowing through our stock of lives. About half way through the game I had heard that at least one team had fallen, and then Kermit was admiring my work with the needler, telling GV to check it out how to use it lol.

After some close calls, we were able to last through the full 15 minutes and when the smoke cleared, we were victorious! Apparently, we were the only team to come up with a plan other than “not die” as said by Ibeechu. Victory was ours! (can’t find the pic, sorry!)

After that, we went back to Halo Reach as Bones had a few more contests for us. I ended up tying one game for the most assassinations with Unnh, but I conceded the prize to him since I already had it. So Unnh became the new proud owner of a brute vs ODST megablok set. For the rest of the contests, P-Kay was just cleaning house, and kicking our asses. He must have won at LEAST ½ of the games. Once all of the prizes were gone, we had enough time to play some Combat Evolved.

Ask him about all the swag he won. It’s amazing

Ok, I’ll say this the nicest way I can, but to me, playing Combat Evolved was probably the least fun of the Halos we played.
KILL HIM, FIND HIM AND KILL HIM is what I’m sure some of you are thinking but hear me out-

So we had enough to do 16 players, and the first game we set out to play was CTF on Sidewinder. That meant 4 xboxs, 4 player split screen. It was the laggiest hot mess that I’ve played in recent memory. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it back in the day, and I still love it now (for what it was) but it was pretty clear that sometimes, nostalgia clouds your judgment and memories. I’m sure someone will point out that we were using 360’s and it probably would have played better on the original xbox in a LAN but well we didn’t, so we made the best with what we had. Frame rate was terrible, the game physically stopped and froze twice on prisoner when everyone tossed a grenade at the same time, and it was just really spotty. I’m happy with the Halo’s we have now, and nothing will ever touch the campaign of Combat Evolved but the MP is not the perfect thing that everyone remembers it being, I PROMISE. It was fun yes, but only because I had HBOers with me. I’m glad Halo has evolved the way it has, for me, its only gotten better.

We got a few games in and then it was time to call it for the evening. We packed up everything, cleaned up, and headed back to Bones place for the evening.

Before we left, Korny gathered us all for a quick group photo. Then BlueRunner said, “I wish Snipe here” and we all got sad…

Hell, even when we got to the house I was still pretty broken up about it

I think the last thing I remember participating in was a conversation about the nature of the Flood and how we might see them in one way or another in Halo 4 with Levi, Postmortem, and GV. After that, sleeps.

Day 3

I awoke the next morning more refreshed than the first night, luckily people went to sleep a little earlier than they did the night before. I was one of the first to awake so I had unfettered access to the donut stash from yesterday. There was no wakeup call from Mama Vagueness today, so everyone else got a little more sleep as well. Everyone gathered around the kitchen while Padraig told us stories:

The morning was filled with excitement and sadness all at the same time. Excitement for another day of gaming, sadness for those who would be departing in a few hours. Once everyone was up and ready to go, BlueRunner, Canecutter, Sammy and Nando entered the house (they had gotten a hotel room) to join us for lunch before leaving for the day. I was anxious myself. Not for lunch, but to unveil my surprise to everyone before they left. The window was shrinking and I didn’t want to miss my opportunity to share something I had worked hard on with people I knew would appreciate it. While I was formulating a plan, Bones and Kermit were planning lunch. Everyone had decided to go to a local restaurant called “The Nickel Plate” who was apparently well known for their chicken fingers. With the clock working against us we all piled into various cars and sped off for lunch. When we arrived, the wait staff seemed excited and terrified all at the same time for the large group of us. They were able to seat us all in one area so we were all together which was nice. I ended up at the cool kids table of Jennos, Kermit and Bluerunner. We all chatted about the day before, the sweet frags, the hilarious fails. As we waited for our food to arrive and Korny passed around his camera, Bluerunner kept us entertained with more of his stories. This is more or less accurate:

Gimmie 5 bees you’d say

Eventually our food came and we all ate. I ended up ordering the kids grilled cheese sandwich (which was delicious, I would add) because I just wasn’t that hungry. I tend to not eat much when I’m on the road. The meal wrapped up fairly quick, but not the hilarity. See, the Nickel Back Plate only had one men’s room and there were 17 of us. I remember it happening like this:

-Unnh goes to use the bathroom, some time passes

-Padraig goes to use the bathroom, even more time passes

-I finally get my turn to use the bathroom , Padraig walks out looks at me, snickers and says “Rev”

-I do my thing and come out, Canecutter is next in line.

-I walk back to my seat, and Padraig looks at me, laughs and says, “dude I am so sorry “ to which I pause and reply with:

“Not as sorry as Canecutter is!” lol

So we left a big tip as I’m pretty sure we destroyed the Nickle Plate’s bathroom plating.
Well, when you serve food this big you bring it upon yourselves

We left and headed back to the house. It was about that time for Cane, Blue, Korny and Sammy to leave, but I had one more thing to do. With the assistance of Sammy, Jennos and Bones, I headed upstairs to being assembling my Mk V suit. Korny was kind enough to photograph the process so I could document it for my records and to share on the 405th. Usually my girlfriend (or handler as I like to call her) helps me with this as I have not perfected getting the whole thing on by myself yet, but since she was not here I had to walk these guys through it and they did an awesome job!
Once everything was on, and the lights I installed were on, it was time to share my terrible secret with the HBOers downstairs. I can’t describe the moment I came down Cinderella like from the stairs, so hopefully these will do the trick:

This guy knows how to throw a party

I stood in the doorway, spun around a few times so everyone could see and someone turn off the lights so my armor’s lights might show better.
GV being the purist that he is, took one look at me and said “Why are the lights purple? Spartans don’t have purple lights” to which Bones replied “Because they’re fucking cool Vagueness” and we all just laughed.

We headed outside for quick group pictures before Cane and crew had to leave us. We walked out to the side yard and I let anyone who wanted to take a quick picture next to me doing whatever they wanted.

I then decided to walk up to the end of the street and wave at passing traffic like a crazy person

Lol I remember one lady passing me and just laughing while a car with a couple of dudes in it knew exactly what I was and their jaws just dropped as they pointed at me. Ahhh so worth it.
And the group shot

I’m not sure why Blue’s getting that close to me…don’t tell his wife

We went back inside and the crew helped me get out of my armor. I went downstairs to get a drink when I was assaulted by a shark! In Indiana!

Lol apparently Jennos had known that I was bringing my suit and not wanting to miss out on the fun, brought her own costume as well haha

With that, we all said our sad goodbyes as Cane’s group left for home. After they left, we quickly gathered our equipment again and setup at the club house. Day 3 was a little different. Bones had planned the first gaming day to be nothing but Halo, while the other day would be more about non-halo games.

Six Min Whistle was kind enough to bring his Wii so that we could play Smash Brothers. (Oh and I haven’t mentioned it yet, but Six bears a striking resemblance to Mig Chavez)

Long lost son?

Padraig joined Six and I for some Bro Brawlin action, with the two of them switching between multiple characters. Paddy seemed to enjoy playing as all the big characters that take up ½ the screen like Bowser and Donkey Kong. He also enjoyed playing a lot as Wario
I wonder why?

I stuck to playing as my favorite character Samus (I know, clearly I have an addiction to power armor) and managed to win a few games. Six was also quick to just destroy Padriag and I when we were distracted fighting each other, netting some wins for himself. After a few quick games of that we all decided that it was time to switch gears to a game all of us could play, so we busted out Left 4 Dead 2.

If you haven’t played L4D2 in a LAN setting, you are missing out on some great fun. Bones even got his siblings to participate in a few games, to which they quickly kicked my teams collective asses. Lol I don’t think that Six, Unnh, Ibeechu and I had any strategy other than “run like hell” and it showed. Padraig and Bone’s sister in particular took great joy in ripping our faces off as the infected.

When you see it

As the night began to wind down, Bones ordered some more pizza and we started to clean up a few things. Meanwhile, P-Kay and GV played through the ENTIRE H:CEA campaign, finding all the Easter eggs along the way while Kermit and Levi also gave CE a spin, but NOT CEA:

Once done, we packed up everything we had brought, made sure that nothing was left behind or missing and then headed back to the house for one more night.

Day 4

I had to be up early on Monday, I had a long drive ahead of me to take Padraig home. (when I DID take him home we stopped at my house first since it was on the way to unload my armor, I really wanted to say “fuck it Padraig, I’m too lazy to take you back, you live here now” but that didn’t happen)
After a quick shower and one last donut, Jennos and I discussed all the fun we had with the LAN, and some costume related things while the zombies downstairs began to awake. We all gathered around, said our goodbyes and then Team MK V walked out into the morning mist to disappear into the corn fields from whence we came.

Ok, so we really just got in my truck and drove off but it was still pretty dramatic.
I had a great time playing with everyone and an even greater time meeting everyone. Being able to put faces to names was great, and I truly had a wonderful weekend. I’d like to give a shout out to Bones for taking the time to organize the event, and for bending over backwards to make sure everyone was happy and taken care of. You really busted your ass sir, and I hope you had as much fun as I did. Hopefully we do another one of these soon!

If you read this far, then congratulations- hopefully this long winded document gave you a window into that glorious event, a small way to see it how I saw it and all the fun I had with great games and even greater friends.

And the best freaking cookies that I have ever eaten. EVAR.
