Hands on Halo 4 Impressions *Long*
Posted By: CaneCutter <can3cutt3r@gmail.com>Date: 7/9/12 12:07 p.m.

**Disclaimer**The build we played was the same build as E3 and is likely to change. Maybe drastically. Also, this write up consists mostly of my opinion. Which is not fact.**/Disclaimer**

First things first, a big thank you should go out to Rooster Teeth for putting on such a great convention and another one to 343i for showing us HBOers the "VIP" treatment. Both groups made this past weekend truly special. So, THANK YOU!!

As a quick aside, getting to the convention for me and my friend proved to be a monumental task that I barely overcame. Barely. But that's a story for another day. If you ever care to hear it, buy me a beer some day and we'll discuss.

What you'll find below are my notes that I jotted down right after playing each mode and then added to/corrected after the convention. I hope it's not too disjointed and hard to read. If it is, deal with it. I'm not going back and rewriting all this stuff. BTW, we got to play ~ 16 games of Halo 4 because the HBOers in attendance got invited to the "VIP" party Saturday night (thanks bsangel!). Alright, enough chit chat. On to the good stuff!

Regicide on Adrift

Feels like you're actually heavy - Between the sound and movement, 343 has done an outstanding job at making you feel like you're wearing a suit of armor. And it's heavy.

Build had fall damage - E3 build. CA guy said that a lot of stuff has changed. Maybe this. Not sure.

Regicide is hectic - Fun but hectic. FFA games aren't really my thing but it's pretty fun for FFA.

BR, DMR, and Carbine are all powerful and feel good - One of the things that I liked about H4 is that no matter which loadout I chose, I felt powerful right on spawn. Felt like I could compete at all times. Even with the AR/Pistol loadout. The DMR is more for long range. It has bloom but I didn't have any trouble killing with it by firing as fast as I wanted to. Carbine wrecks. It has no bloom and fires as fast as you can pull the trigger. It takes more shots to kill but it's on par with the BR and DMR in kill times. The BR is discussed below. All 3 of these weapons sounded fantastic.

Sword lunge is way reduced - You need to be a lot closer to lunge now. And it takes, what seems like an eternity, to pull it out and use it.

Sprint and sword won't be as effective - With the lunge reduced, I think this will make sprint + sword less effective. That and slowing down when shot while sprinting.

Pistol seems at a good balance - Love this weapon. Fast fire rate, shallow clip, decent range and
power (similar to Reach), nice reticule. Got a lot of kills with it.

Bringing out the sword to use it takes longer - See above.

Sound is awesome - Awesome is an understatement. Well done 343. Well done.

Hard light shield saved me only once out ~ 4 times - I used this more than I anticipated. Felt nicely balanced. You move and turn slowly. Grenades eat this thing up. Best used in 1v1 situations.

Grenades were picked up as weapon drops - Unless you had the Resupply (specialization?) that allowed the pickup of grenades off dead bodies. They would show up in your HUD just like the other weapons that would spawn in.

No personal ordnance - Not for this version of Regicide.

Needler felt good the half time I used it - Used it more later. It's beast!

Sprint seems slower more clunky. In a good way. - You can't turn as easy as you can in Reach. You seem to "lumber" more when sprinting. Enhances the heavy feeling discussed earlier.

Adrift was a little too dark for my taste - And it was a lot more vertical (in the center) than I expected. I'm hoping they turn up the lights a bit.

Radar took some getting used to but it's useful as you'd expect. - Totally natural after 2 games.
Text is a non issue. Didn't even notice it. - It just became white noise (stolen from CA guy). It was no bother to me at all.

Game just feels good. No thoughts of COD at all. - It's Halo. And it's really fun.

Armor looks pretty bad ass - Really like some of the new helmets. Didn't look around too much at the customization options.

Configuration screens are weird and took some getting used to but I like them overall. - Just different than what I was used to. 4 games in and I didn't have any issues with navigation.

Regicide was fun and hectic, but once I played Infinity Team Slayer, it was no contest. Out of the ~ 16 games I played, 2 were Regicide. 'Nuf said.

Infinity Team Slayer on Haven

Pistol is awesome - See above

Not knocked out of zoom when shot but really hard to stay on target - When it happened to me, it knocked my reticule up and off the target. I'm not sure how this will play over the long haul or if it even still exists, but it's an interesting mechanic that I'll be watching closely.

Personal ordnance drop is not game breaking. Really fun - I was worried about this, but the gameplay is so fast and the spawn weapons are so strong, that this didn't break the game or feel of Halo.

BR is just fun to use - It's back and maybe more satisfying to use than ever. Really good short to medium range precision weapon. Got a lot of kills with it. Firing it made me smile. The only difference I noticed in the way it performed from Halo 3 was it seems to be less effective at longer ranges.

Sticky detonator is hard to use - Slow moving and it stuck to everything I shot it at. It can be air bursted if you're quick enough. It didn't seem to have a large blast radius. As most people have said, probably a good defensive type weapon.

Grenades feel like they do a ton of damage but I don't think that's actually true. Lived a few times where I thought I would've died. - I think this "feel" is due to the beefed up sound along with the damage indication.

After ~ 16 games, it's just fun to play.

Rockets splash damage is a lot lower - Rockets were nerfed for this build. No doubt about it. I'd bet on this changing.

Slow down when sprinting and getting shot.

Using promethean vision in conjunction with radar is nice. - This may prove out to be overpowered but using PV with the radar was really useful. I used the radar to limit my use of PV and then PV to see what they might be doing once spotted on the radar.

Grenades don't seem to go as far. Lower arc. Seems to be momentum based too. - I never did quite get the hang of these. I got better but I never really placed them as consistently as I can with Reach. But they bounce consistently. Which is good.

Still don't like the medals. But that might change... - CA guy slyly mentioned to me that I probably shouldn't worry about the medals.

Needler wrecks if you can keep the reticule red - Got a few double kills with it. The ammo count seemed to limit the potential kills to 2 or 3. I think it only tracks when the reticule is red. Reloads fast. Sounds great.

Disintegration happens only on one shot kills with the Scattershot. - Info from CA guy.

Melee range seems to be reduced. I would also guess that maybe 10% of kills were melee. Big emphasis on gunplay. - This game seems to really focus on gunplay. And it does it well. Aiming was really nice and smooth. Guns were beefy and felt powerful.

Since I only got one game on Longbow, I'd say Haven was my favorite map. I really liked the flow and simplistic yet beautiful art style.

It's fun.

It's really fun.

It's super fun!! - LOL at me nerding out.

Infinity Slayer on Longbow

Warthog feels grounded, drives well. - It sounds great (notice a trend?) and handles like you think a vehicle of its weight should. It does seem a bit slower, however.

Turret overheats - The visual indication is different than Reach but it's there.

Map is beautiful - All the maps were, but this one especially.

Sniper is hard to shoot. Kicks like a mule. - When I picked it up off a dead body, I think it had 7 rounds. I missed 2 shots completely and had 5 body shots. One I could've sworn was a headshot, but apparently not. It's definitely harder to use than the Reach sniper. I'm not crazy about the design. It looks too bulky to me as it takes up alot of screen area. Sounds great, of course.

Mongoose handles well - Handles as expected. Really like the new engine sound for it.

Longbow really showed the range limitation of the BR - This map had long enough site lines that showed the BR starts to be less effective at distance. I found myself using the carbine for long engagements and the BR for the mid to short. I thought this map really drove home the different ranges of the weapons for me.

Sticky detonator rounds can be detonated after switching weapons. - This is something I didn't expect. I found this out by accident. You can fire the detonator, switch weapons and it won't blow up. To get it to blow up, switch back to it and pull the trigger again.

Plasma pistol - I actually got a kill by firing it in single bursts. However, I'm not sure how powerful it will be since their shields were already down. The tracking for the charged shot was better than Reach but not as bad as H2.

Storm Rifle/AR wreck shop at close range - Both of these weapons worked really well at close range, but seemed to fall off sharply at anything other than close quarters. Look for one kill per "magazine" for these weapons.

Well, hopefully you found some unique/interesting info in all that jumbled up garbage. LOL My apologies if it's just a long winded repeat.

Anyway, this was me and my friend's first ever Halo convention and it was something neither of us will ever forget. It was awesome to not only get to play Halo 4, but to meet other HBOers along with Rooster Teeth and 343i employees as well as seeing the awesomeness that the 405th can produce. Thanks to everyone for making it special!
