Hey, this is Josh Holmes - this is the first time that I have posted here, so please be nice. :-) To answer your question: YES you can absolutely pick up any weapons that are dropped in the course of battle. The progression system handles the unlocking of customizable load out elements (all of which are balanced against one another, so there is no high level "ubergun"), but you can use anything you scavenge.
