Halo: The Fall of Reach comic sales figures/review
Posted By: HedgemonyDate: 4/13/12 6:44 p.m.

January saw Halo: The Fall of Reach Invasion #1 sell an estimated 7,155 taking the position of #201 on overall sales charts.

February saw issue 2 sell an estimated 6,446. Listed at #247.

Issue 3 slipped a month and was just released. (This issue was probably my favorite so far.)

Here's some random thoughts. The amount the comic is selling is nearer to Independent titles or main titles from Dark Horse/Dynamite comics. The drop in sales from issue 1-2 is inevitable. I expect a further drop in sales with issues 3-4 but nothing drastic.

It's been a clever ploy to renumber this series every four issues as new buyers are more likely to buy a first issue of a title then later numbers. It's also a way for Marvel to release each part of the story in a collected format. No doubt there will be a complete edition released when this series ends.

My overall opinion of the book is mixed. I'm still unconvinced that artist Felix Ruiz was a great choice for drawing what is an epic story with some great visual moments. His "messy" style is too busy for a story that is trying to cram a lot of info into each issue. Because the panels are small you lose a sense of scale to battles and these key moments are diminished. The coloring for the book is washed out and flat. As such there is little visual variation from interiors of buildings/ships to planet environments/exteriors.

The times when the comic does work really well is when characters are having smaller conversations. The highlight so far is issue 3 with Keyes and the PoA which has almost half the comic to itself. In fact, Keyes is so cool that you almost wish the Spartan moments didn't happen because they have zero character at all.

Perhaps the shortcomings of the novel are coming to bear in such a straight forward translation. It would have been nice if writer Brian Reed had of strayed outside of the novel while still being faithful to it in order to give the book better pacing and allow for the reader to connect more with characters. As such, it all feels very flat with few standout moments. A dedicated ink/color team would have lifted Ruiz's work above his hurried sketch style and bland color palette.

It's still an okay title. But it's just that: okay.
