: I thought the embargo was lifted. Sorry.

It's not really an embargo.

Okay, here's how it works.

Sometimes, there are events where lots of news organizations are brought in to see new content, all in one place. The developer will put an embargo on stories about what has been seen to make sure that all outlets have an equal shot of putting together a news story (otherwise, if the event's a week long, folks who come on the first day have an unfair advantage over folks that come on the last day). Nobody is allowed to talk about what they've seen until some time AFTER the last organization has had a chance to see and process.

THAT'S an embargo. That has nothing to do with Game Informer.

Sometimes, a news outlet will get exclusive rights to certain content, or to certain content in a specific timeframe. (Usually, there's money involved, so those rights actually MEAN something to the outlet in question.) This content will not typically be released on the web, for any to see - it'll be published in print, or behind an online pay wall.

That's what's going on with Game Informer.

GI paid money to get the content they got. They hope to recoup that money by selling magazines - either paper or electronic versions.

If you post that content on the web, for anyone to see, the incentive to BUY it from GI goes way down.

If you link to someone ELSE'S posting of that content, you're doing them as much harm as if you posted it yourself.

I get that information wants to be free. And I'm annoyed as anyone by how some of this info gets locked up for a time because someone wants to make a buck.

And I'd be even MORE annoyed if I lived somewhere where I couldn't even buy the stuff if I WANTED to.

BUT NONE OF THESE ANNOYANCES JUSTIFIES STEALING.

We can't stop you from finding this stuff on your own - and we're not even going to try and convince you that there's no justification for breaking the rules, for yourself.

What we ARE saying is that good or bad, we're abiding by those rules here - and enforcing them on anyone who visits here. We're not judging what you do - just what you do HERE.

Does that make more sense?
