Stop calling it "Call of Halo"
Posted By: Metalingus627 <mtracy627@yahoo.com>Date: 4/9/12 2:58 p.m.

I'm getting pretty sick of hearing that term, and it's been thrown around ever since Reach, if not further back then that. I'm going to defer to this post in order to clarify how I feel about the game:

http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=1133372

So, here's my take on this whole situation:

Spartan Ops: While Firefight will be missed as a wasted opportunity, Spartan Ops sounds like perhaps the greatest thing about this game, and I'm almost more excited for it than I am for the regular Campaign. A free episodic Campaign that expands the story of the Halo Universe and allows us to make our own story about our own Spartan? Hell yes please! I've been wanting something like this since Halo 3. They perhaps could have named it better, since literally the ONLY resemblance this seems to have to COD's Spec-Ops mode is the name and Co-Op focus. Seems possible that this is simply a placeholder name like the multiplayer map names.

Firefight is gone, but to be completely honest it was a fun novelty for me that quickly got stagnant and repetitive, and thus lost its' draw. I know others are huge fans of the mode however, so maybe it will make its' return in future titles.

Instant Respawn: Honestly, this is the only thing that worries me, since this seems like it's intended to up the pace of multiplayer where it should be and should always remain a bit slower-paced than most Multiplayer titles. I'm willing to remain cautiously optimistic about it, however. The way it sounds now, it would seem that you don't respawn until you click X, which means that you could have more time to pick a Loadout, or perhaps even be able to adjust your loadout on the fly like Battlefield.

Drop-In, Drop-Out: I think about 90% of us are grateful for this, with the other 10% only mildly upset. Quitters ruined my love of team games in Halo, and are the reason I mostly stick to Living Dead or SWAT (where quitters don't have as huge an impact) now. You will never, ever get people to stop quitting, so you might as well cater to the people who suffer because of them. I hope there is still some small consequence for quitting, like losing out on a match bonus or something similar.

Weapon Drops: I won't comment on this until we see how the system actually works. I imagine there are only a few designated "drop zones" on any given map, and waypoints will always locate them on your HUD or Radar. I'll remain cautiously optimistic about this for now.

Spartan Points: And here we are, the main reason "Call of Halo" get's thrown around. This is the biggest source of outrage besides possibly Weapon drops, and I see why, but I don't agree with the people who hate it. People are upset that the "balance" of Halo is being destroyed, that it's now possible for a General to crush a Private because he'll have infinitely better gear then the Private will ever dream of getting, and I call total bullshit.

Here's what makes Call of Duty "unbalanced" towards new players: Killstreak Rewards, Perk enhancements, better guns (debatable), and better gun attachments. A Recruit starts the game with a few pre-selected classes that will help them get on their feet until they can create their own class. While the starting guns are all usually pretty shitty, the starting perks are inherently useful in their own right. However, that player is gonna have a rough time still because godlike players will constantly be calling in Killstreak rewards one after another, be able to magically spot them from across the entire map and kill them with one or two shots, and have all kinds of shotguns, snipers, and rocket launchers that they unlocked that will totally wreck the player until they get good enough to just barely squeak by in a game.

This does NOT describe what Halo 4 multiplayer sounds like. Here is how I envision it:

When you start Multiplayer, you are asked to Build your first Loadout. You start out with just enough Spartan Points to unlock your first Armor ability, Gun, or Armor set. Let's say that the Default (IE: already available to you without purchase) list would be Jet Pack, Assault Rifle, and that ugly EOD/Scout mix armor we see in the trailers (which perhaps grants you some kind of health or shield boost). You are given a list of items to purchase, meaning most, if not all of the unlockables in the game, few or none of which would be locked behind an impermeable rank barrier. This would be available to all players right from the get-go. Balance isn't destroyed any more than it was in Reach, it's just spread around depending on your play-style.

Of course I could be totally wrong, but I don't think 343 is keen on sacrificing new players to the godly wrath of veterans. Hell, if anything they are morally opposed to that idea, and weapon drops proves it. I don't think any given weapon or ability will necessarily be better than any other in the game. Just because you only have an Assault Rifle and Pistol doesn't mean you can't kill somebody holding a DMR. Just because you only have Jetpack doesn't mean you can't kill somebody who has Active Camo. And without Killstreak Rewards, gun attachments, or unlockable power weapons (which would all have to be present for this to be a true rip-off of COD); Veterans only really have the same advantage that they have always had: skill.

Spartan Points are simply the evolution of Reach's limited Loadout system, and I really look forward to seeing what they have planned.

This is not "Call of Halo," it's not even "Battlefield: Halo," this is truly Halo: Combat Evolved.
