Art of Video Games *semi OT, IMGs*

In case you haven't heard, the American Art Museum opened its Art of Video Games exhibit down in Washington DC. I popped in with my brother, not realizing a) the Metro would be crushed since it's St. Patrick's, and b) the opening festivities were this weekend, which meant a crushing crowd.

And lines, did I mention lines?

Downstairs in the forum a lot of random festivities were happening--open play, craft activities, live action gaming with Spontaneous Art and dj MKO, and musical performances by 8 Bit Weapon and Triforce Quartet, apparently. My favorite was all the earnest people working on pixel art.

I think the people in the background are doing live Frogger.

The exhibit was kind of meh--a lot of history but not a lot of text, meaning it was hard to really parse what was going on, and it was more a celebration of gaming evolution than art itself. Still, it was interesting and had some Halo elements.

You could play Mario Bros., Flower, Monkey Island, and Myst for three minutes each. If you know what you're doing, you can speedrun Myst in that time. The guy running the booth said that one chap was one screen away from completing the game while Myst creator Rand Miller was right behind him. Poor chap.

The Chief didn't get much love, but he appeared in the Xbox highlights and the main reel as you entered the exhibition.

You can check out more (bad iPhone) pics in a Flickr photoset here. If you're in the neighborhood, check it out--it's free!
