100% bloom vs 85% bloom, in pictures. | |

The other day I decided to load up a custom game to test the relative shot spread of various weapons in both vanilla and TU Reach. Both the DMR and Needle Rifle were fired at their max RoF, while the AR (which is presented for comparing the most common automatic gun with the two primary precision weapons) is fired in full-auto and in 2- and 4-round bursts. I had SESpider help me out to get screenshots showing the size of the shot patterns compared to a Spartan. All tests were done at a range of approximately 20 meters (there may be a few centimeters difference with certain weapons). Here are the results (high-res shots can be found here). As we can see, 85% bloom is effectively zero bloom for the needle rifle and when crouching with the DMR due to how fast the reticle resets. Only standing DMR spamfire will experience any shot spread, and even then it's negligible. The spread for the DMR and NR was already sufficiently low, particularly when crouching (which as we know causes the reticle to reset faster than when standing). 85% bloom doesn't just "speed up gameplay"; it makes it to where at any given range a player will land a substantially greater percentage of their shots even when spamming the trigger. 85% bloom was pointless (players could already reduce bloom by crouching) and wrecks weapon balance. If 343i wanted to reduce bloom, 95% bloom should have been their starting point, though personally I think they should have increased bloom and/or given the automatic weapons a damage boost. Also of note is how accurate the AR is when firing in short, controlled bursts. Definitely the most accurate incarnation of the weapon in the series. Too bad 85% bloom renders it largely useless.
