You don't need expensive cutscenes, professional scripts and Nolan North to catch the player's emotion. That's where this generation is going wrong for me. Be a good game and deliver it through your play. Consider: we're on a Halo board. I'd argue most of what Halo evokes is done through gameplay and art and sound, the key strengths of video games. Reach's Lone Wolf is a great example. What it has to say is said mostly through the level; the cutscene just caps it off. Plus there are other emotions than rage and sadness. Games can connect with the player to give joy in a way few other media can. Jaffe is criticizing the industry focus on making big, bombastic, linear "experiences." He's right.
