Winter Games Fest - Write Up & Winners
Posted By: Tex <agirlnamedtex@gmail.com>Date: 1/16/12 11:33 a.m.

Hey all. If you remember, Winter Games Fest was this weekend. I was not able to attend but my friend was and sent me a sweet little write-up to post on his behalf..and from what I know for a brick, he did pretty good.

Dear HBO,

This is Ender, I am a long-time Halo fan, and I write to inform you that the competitive Halo scene is alive and well. The Sixth College Technology Committee of UCSD hosted a massive Esports tournament this past weekend, and it went splendidly. As to be expected nowadays, Starcraft was the main attraction, pulling in hundreds if not thousands of competitors and spectators over the course of three days. However, the Microsoft Store and sponsor FanBoy Gaming didn't forget about the console community. They showed up with a myriad of prizes, and state of the art equipment. The Halo matches were played on brand new Gaems Inc. G155 portable Xbox rigs, and they were sweet. Getting triple kills is easy when you have a quick monitor and a respectable speaker system, which is exactly what that Xbox-in-a-briefcase provided.

The Halo tournament had about 15 teams of 4, and mine was fortunate enough to take first. The mixture of my passion for Halo's artwork and history collided with my experiences in the pro gaming community when I found myself playing a remake of Halo PC's timberland for money. Honestly, I never thought I'd see the day, and I bet if you went back in time a decade and told my 11 year old self (who was no doubt sitting on a computer trying to figure out how to use Sapien) he wouldn't believe it either. Now if only 343 Industries will remake New_Mombasa_Classic by NiTrOusOxiDe and Mrs. Doublefire. Then we'll really be in business. Does anybody remember that? Bueler?

In all seriousness, the new Anniversary maps are as gorgeous as they are playable. The remake of battle creek is scaled correctly, and the spawn system works. I felt like I was playing Halo 1, and it was a great feeling. If any of you haven't played a solid game of team slayer on the new maps, I recommend that you give em' a go.

All in all, thanks to UCSD for a really fun time. I was pleasantly reminded why we play this game - because it brings us together.

Sarge is not dead,
Ender
