News from the Halo Panel at the NY Comic Con
Posted By: Simpsons Rule <SimpsonsRule17@gmail.com>Date: 10/16/11 2:34 a.m.

I went to the Halo panel at the New York Comic Con today and while I realize the major gaming sites have been reporting on the things announced, I figure I might as well tell you guys what I saw.

There were four "world premiere" announcements.

1) Hang 'em High is being re-made (again). I wish I had captured a video of the preview they showed because it really looked amazing. The scene outside the map area was jaw-dropping. I usually don't get excited about the visuals in a multiplayer map, but the video they showed was impressive. I have a feeling the "cool" stuff is in the non-playable area outside, but even still it was very well done.

2) ATLAS was announced. It is a mobile app that will allow you to view an overhead map of a multiplayer game you are currently playing and see where your team is, what weapon they have, and if they are under fire or recently deceased. It did not appear to show enemy positions, and I'm not sure if the mobile app will be available on non-windows mobile phones. The wording they used did not definitively say it was exclusive but any time it was referred to they said windows mobile phones. Either way, this integration looks very awesome but at the same time I feel it would be better if it was available in-game.

3) Custom Challenges were announced. You will be able to make a custom challenge, similar to the weekly and daily challenges already offered, and give them to up to 7 friends to complete (whether that's 7 including yourself or not I'm not sure). The more difficult the challenges, the more credits that will be awarded. They did not show exactly how this would work, but it seems very cool. With the Waypoint integration, they will be able to track how many times people completed your challenge and I'm sure other statistics relating to it.

4) Kinect support will allow an "analyze" mode where enemy corpses and special in-game objects can be analyzed. Information is then gathered and added to a library where you can view 3D models of the enemy/object and a relevant description will be available. It seemed very much like the Bestiarum from Halo 3. During the question and answer session it was confirmed that you will require Kinect to see the "analyze" mode. Insert sad panda image here. Someone on the panel tried to reason that they couldn't add a button that would make the "analyze" mode appear but realistically I think this is just Microsoft's way of pushing more Kinect units. The Kinect support will also include voice recognition in commands like "reload," "grenade," "remastered," and "legacy."

I recorded most of the Question and Answer panel (I didn't think of doing so immediately so the first few questions aren't there). It was recorded on my cell phone and I didn't have a great view but if you'd like to see it I uploaded it to YouTube.

Here's a breakdown of the information gathered from the Question and Answer session:

Rooster Teeth did a fly-through of the Halo: Anniversary multiplayer maps. The videos will become available starting 7 days before the release of Halo: Anniversary as one new video is released each day. Gus joked that he painstakingly went to Certain Affinity to play the maps for you guys, so you should appreciate him.

Someone asked if the thirsty grunt was kept in. The answer was evasive, neither confirming nor denying it. Eggs were looked at, some new ones were added and presumably some old ones were removed. They did say they tried to be as faithful as possible to the original.

Indestructible vehicles will not be present in multiplayer but will be present in the campaign so "go nuts."

There is no DLC planned for Halo: Anniversary prior to Halo: 4's release.

When they were deciding what maps they should bring back, they said they focused on maps which had yet to be seen on an Xbox 360 version of Halo.

Co-op is limited to 2 players because 4 people in the Halo 1 campaign would be far too easy and they didn't want to scale encounters.
