A good old time on New Alexandria
Posted By: General Vagueness <General.Vagueness@gmail.com>Date: 8/2/11 5:37 p.m.

I'll get to the pictures and stuff, one thing first: I'd like to apologize to whoever rendered my film clip "Ugliness Kills", when I played it on my 360 Kat said the line "That's for being so damn ugly", it seems campaign film files have this weird thing about 10 second increments/intervals, i.e. if you don't start on one, things can go wrong.
So, I was poking through my files doing some clean-up and I decided to finally get to one I'd been saving and/or putting off deleting for about 8 months-- get to it as in use it, that is. It was Kermit and I playing New Alexandria on Legendary.
I found out the lightning strikes don't seem to come from anywhere but wash the entire city in a bluish-white light intermittently for a few frames. It looks pretty but not great to me, but maybe you disagree.

I don't know if the light was actually modeled or whatever the term is or if stuff was just colored differently, but here are the mountains outside the city lit by the newly molten rock around them.

Kermit and I like Buck...

apparently the feeling isn't mutual.

As I was reviewing the film I noticed something and it seemed familiar went to take a screenshot to ask you guys. I zoomed out to show the whole thing and then more and more to give visual context and I noticed something weird.

Sinoviet building top from the south

(By the way, opening any of these pictures in a new tab should start a download of the full-size version, except this one, it's on my Photobucket and should just display.)
There are four buildings pointing at the Sinoviet building, and they're lined up, and the lines cross. At first I thought I was seeing things, but they really seem to be in the formation of a (typical Christian) cross, and that's not the only place this shows up (though the proportions vary).

This one is especially big and the fourth building has a different top on it, but it's clearly the same

hospital cross

I haven't done a real comparison, but I'd say New Alexandria has the best music in the game. It has a lot of other good examples of things that typify Reach's atmosphere too. I call this one "Futility".

Going along with this are this film clip, and this one.

One of the goals of this game was to show and ask about a door on the building with DEK on the side. I know Brutes spawn behind it on one of the randomized missions but on the back of the building there's a small black area that makes a different sound from the rest of the building when meleed, and when you hit it with any attack (melee, grenade, or shooting), the top door of the building opens, as demonstrated here. I don't know if there's something significant behind it but it is, as they say, pretty dang strange.
Another goal was to activate the Pelcian trick/easter egg/whatever (if you don't know how, you can probably find a better walkthrough than I'd give), and once we did, we had fun, which was another key goal.
Here we see the mating ritual of the wild Pelican.
We tried some things and it turns out you can use the Pelican's turret. That's old news after that one challenge on Long Night of Solace that got people recommending using the turret of the Pelican in the corvette's hangar bay, but this was long before that. The animations are like using a mounted machine gun turret.

Once that's done, you can make the Covenant something I call...

PelicOwned.

In case you didn't know, when you press the switch that allows you to get a Pelican, all the invisible barriers disappear (kind of, you still can't get past the areas described by the map file like in Halo 3 and ODST). I mentioned in another thread the doors on the corvettes outside the regular playable area, and I've mentioned what's on them a good few times, so I'll just get to what behind the ones in the back: a hallway. It probably sounds uninteresting and it looks that way if you enter from one side, but from the other....

That looks more like the Covenant hallways I remember.

That's not all, if you look at the middle of the back (you can see it better at a shallow angle), you can see something that reminds me of Covenant- and Forerunner-style interactive displays.

Also while roaming around out there I looked at three buildings I'd noticed that seem to point at each other (which was already interesting enough for me).

It turns out it's a group of se7en buildings pointing at (roughly) the same spot. Again, I don't know if it means or does anything, but it could, and it's interesting (IMHO).

I leave you with a dose of WTF-age. (It turns out a second or two after Buck spawns into his Falcon it shifts position a little, the textures kind of pop, and the Falcon and everything in it gets a little lighter and loses collision, i.e., you can go through it.)

You cannot fall off the floor.
