January through May 2011
In the following graph I attempted to offset Halo 3 values such that similar days of the week for May were compared. I am not 100% happy because the result is affected by the fact that Halo 3's population curve was different than REACH's as weekends approached.
Look what I found.
Someone else has been collecting similar population values longer than me and is using an automated script. What I see there seems to confirm my results. The script failed in December and May results are not posted as of this writing.

Disclosure for my collection methods.
I use a simple copy and paste from Bungie's REACH project page around noon local time. Not all values were collected at exactly that time. Occasionally collection could be off by several hours. I only guarantee that I have made no willful misrepresentations by deliberately skewing collection in such a manner that poor conclusions or comparisons could be made or that any numbers presented are anything other than attempts to collect data from Bungie.
Draw conclusions at your own risk.
My observations.
REACH's 24hr UU population in May started off with its lowest valley ever recorded followed by a slight increase through to the end of the month.
Highest population value collected 671,497.
Lowest population value collected 469,172.
The population experienced a slight increase after the GEARS 3 Beta ended.
Weekends typically have a higher population. That's a no brainer.
REACH during May 2011 is under performing as compared to Halo 3 during May 2008.
Conclusions
Halo REACH's population is healthy and stable with the peaks and valleys being somewhat compressed and an ever so slight increase in population.
Sorry nay sayers, Halo REACH is not dead or dying. Proclaimers of such, should be shot with a frozen ball of their own shit.
If your Friends List is no longer showing anyone playing REACH, I recommend you get some new XBL friends. Actually, my friend list has increased in the number of active REACH players. So there!
