Concept art of Didact's War Sphinxes*IMGs* | |

Since I began reading, and since having finished, Greg Bear's Cryptum has filled my head with many, many pretty visuals - and many visuals that have no reference. And so I doodled... New ships, new characters, new locations from a race/species/collection of species? that we barely know. We've seen only a fraction of visuals from their side of Halo's history, and it could be argued that this fraction could be only one element of their visual style. Just like our industrial factories look very different than our skyscrapers... I kept that in my mind, and took a chance in this particular design. I liked what I was imagining with the War-Sphinx and believed that older artifacts belonging to the Warrior-Servants may have a more articulated, decorated style. And so many doodles led me to this:
And here's an idea for their color, but I'm not 100% sure on it...
Besides their descriptions in Cryptum (and the possible reference in Halo 3's terminals), I also looked at the Sentinels, Enforcers, and the Guardian concept art in The Art of Halo 3. (Also I believe the Omega/Ultima weapon from Final Fantasy VIII crept in there a bit...) The design of the War Sphinx's legs were also strangely influenced by the Sangheili. I was thinking there that the Warrior-Servants' culture reminded me greatly of the Sangheili's culture, and thought a War Sphinx found by the Sangheili long ago might have been a perfect influence for their own culture and religion. The idea being that if the Sangheili had found a Forerunner weapon similar to their own body-type it may have inspired them to believe it belonged to their own godlike forerunners or creators. Yeah, I know... that one's kind of out there! :D And I'm still working on Fistful of Arrows - be patient with me, please!
