I want to submit this to the tips page. Please comment on any errors or adjustments that need to be made. I'm interested in improving it before sending it to Louis. Thanks. (Is the radar device MC is equipped with called a HUD?)
OK, you just fragged a a group of flood standing around and finished off the remaining Flood Warrior with a shotgun. You begin to move forward past the spot you just cleared only to find a four ... five ... no make that six flood warriors and assorted spores barreling toward you at a running speed! The lead flood, a converted human, leaps high into the air and as you waste him in mid flight using your skeet shooting skills, you return to eye level to pop the next one 10 feet away, and yet another, but, arggh, there are just too many of those damn things and the ones you did finish have popped back up! Refusing to stand in line to take their medicine, they prefer to swarm upon you with a few mortal lashes. This is a common situation, especially in places like The Library or toward the end of Two Betrayals. So what do you do? What weapon do you use to combat the amped up numbers and strength of the flood you find on Legendary (ah, if you only had a full-auto shotgun with plenty of 100 round clips). Your greatest weapon in many cases is patience and space. Yes, those are indeed weapons -- not just in the metaphorical sense. In cases where you must proceed through the cavernous rooms and open snow swept ground meeting wave after wave of flood, your best bet is to not always proceed forward, but to judiciously go backwards. What follows is an explanation of why and how. "But I want to go forward!" One of the primary strength of the flood warrior (FW) forms is their basic tactic of attacking in numbers, pooling their incredible individual strength together to corner you and beat you to a bloody pulp. Typically FW groups number 3, 4, 5, 6 or more. Ignite the second generator on Two Betrayals and you will find at least 10 flood filling the generator room seeking your death. Bait, Retreat, Attack One way to take on these groups is to break up the group by using the space behind you. This involves "baiting" the group with forward movement. When you enter an area getting in range of the Flood, they immediately lock onto you. By stepping into an area but not proceeding fully, you in essence bait the FW group, beckoning them to their eventual demise. As you move forward, keep you eye on your HUD. As soon as the perimeter of your HUD lights up with red spots, you know they are coming for you *en masse.* Often, the HUD has the advantage over direct vision, especially in dark open places like the Library. In many case, you will see activity on the HUD before you see the Flood in front of you. This gives you the advantage of preparation. Once you've baited these grotesque MC seeking missiles, the next step is to try and take out a distant flood. My choice is usually the Pistol, Needler or in some instances the Rocket Launcher. Your mileage on the Needler may vary, but I find it helpful to discharge at least most of a clip of needles into a random flood. The other choice is the grenade, paying special attention to timing differences between grenade-types in relation to the speed and distance of your target. With Plasma grenades you will of course need to toss the grenade well in front of the oncoming FW so that they run "into" or just "out of" the explosion radius.
This tactic requires a great deal of useable rearward space. Typically, open areas or huge rooms as found in The Library are ideal for this tactic but it also applicable by retreating through corridors. If it is done correctly, you will find yourself dying fewer times, needing health packs less often, and will make certain levels faster overall.
