Shimmering in Cutscenes - A Closer Look (img)
Posted By: Cody MillerDate: 9/14/10 10:21 p.m.

I noticed the 'shimmering' effect during cutscenes that Miguel described in his podcast. I have not noticed framerate drops like some people, and I have been running the game in both HD and in SD without installing it.

Anyway, upon closer examination…

This is from a 720p capture.

This almost looks like what you'd see if you were looking at an interlaced image, but this is indeed progressive. What's even stranger, is that while all the Halo games run at 30 fps (and thus have duplicate frames when the video stream is viewed), the next frame is exactly the same as this one, double imaging and all!

We see the same thing in SD as well.

The ghost image from each frame is indeed the point in time from the next frame. In essence, it's behaving as if it's interlaced even though it is progressive!

De-interlacing the Standard Definition capture does nothing. The effect is burned into the whole image!

This is strange, but this is why the motion in the cutscenes looks so bad.

Unfortunately I don't see a way to fix it in post, seeing as how it's a ghosted image of the next frame, so a difference matte offset by 2 frames won't work.

My only thought is that the various motion blur and depth of field effects get turned off when things get too complex, and this is some kind of left over artifact from that. Very curious to hear from Bungie on this one.
