I have seen many people speculating about the Covenant religion. I just thought I would add my opinions to the mix.
The Covenant must have encountered the Forerunners before they became technologically advanced. Why would you worship the Forerunners if you understood that it was just technology that made them seem like "gods". If aliens were to land on Earth today, do you think people would worship them? No, we would understand that they are just more knowledgeable then us.
It seems highly unlikely that any advanced species would develop a religion after creating space travel. From what I can see knowledge leads to skepticism. So I believe that the Covenant must have had some kind of contact with the Forerunners before the Covenant had an industrial revolution. Agree?
