Mere, Halo 2 Vista does not use DirectX 10.

But Vista does.

Vista comes installed with DX10. DX9.L is emulated through DX10. Everything you see on Vista uses DX10.

My point still stands that you will never get DX10 or DX9.L on XP.

So what if Vista uses DirectX 10? Halo 2 is built for, and using, DirectX 9. If Halo 2 cared that you had DirectX 10 installed then it would 'be for' DirectX 10, not 9.

I could build a program, on Vista, that uses DirectX 9 but it would still work fine on XP.

Halo 2 Vista looks for, and uses, DirectX 9.L. DirectX 9.L is Vista exclusive and will not work on XP as it, in turn, requires DirectX 10.

There is no API to support DirectX 9.L on XP.

Incase you don't know what DX9.L is, which I doubt highly, it is a special version of XP's DX9 that allows DX9 games to run with Vista's new driver model. The L stands for Longhorn.
